It started as a thought crime; feature graphics are a simple recipe for a logo, character(s), and background. Could we create a design system that could plug into a content management system and create various shaped graphics?
As a part of the PBS KIDS redesign project, the design team took the opportunity to think our way through this question. Cassie Le and I developed a design system and templates proving the idea was possible. Two things, however:
A) Making something simple is hard. It focuses on core design fundamentals, and there is a mask when it is wrong.
B) Sometimes, good ideas don’t translate to good products.
This project status is now post-launch; however, it may be my first project to start dabbling with automation.
THE PROCESS
Grids, layers, systems and a lot of conversations about what makes a good feature graphic.
