“You own an airbrush, right?” As I noted, I said, “Yes.” The project led to one of the most unusual projects I’ve ever done for PBS. Initially, the project’s scope was to design a VR headset, a remote-controlled moon rover, and a lunar mission sticker pack. I was (and please excuse the pun) over the moon.
The scope of remote control moon rover led to its removal, and the challenge of creating a set of tangible VR headsets was a riot. For starters, I hit the internet, reminding myself of the look and feel of that period. With our location in the DC beltway, I took full advantage of the Smithsonian, for which I can not be thankful enough. Then I pulled out the sketchbook and my airbrush. My original directive was to make it look used with pockets of lunar dust. This art direction later changed a design decision I agreed with. Although it was fun to create, who wants to buy something that looks used?
The sticker packs the icing on the cake. I love stickers and patches! The opportunity to design a reimagined 60’s NASA mission patch was fascinating.
